What is the best engine configuration for sportsbikes? Two, Three or Four cylinder engines?? Help please!!?

Im about to buy a sportsbike but, with manufacturers making different engine configurations such as ducati 848= v twin, triumph daytona = 3 cylinder and the most common 4 cylinder of cbrs and r6 r1. Is there any difference in torque and hp, acceleration!?!?
